Surfer Girl Big Splash 2008: ‘The most fun all girls surfing competition in the world’
If you went down to the beach last weekend, you would have been in for a big surprise…for everywhere that anyone looked and any place that you could have stood had come alive with the Surfer Girl Big Splash 2008!!!
On the 5th of October 2008, at halfway Kuta beach-Bali, the Surfer Girl crew kicked off the first annual “Surfer Girl Big Splash:-‘The most fun all girls surfing competition in the world”.
The day got off to an early 6am start as contestants from around the world flocked to the beach to register for the comp. With over 60 contestants from over 10 different countries the first EVER Coca-Cola ISC sanctioned stand alone women’s surfing event in Indonesia’s history could not have asked for a better turn out or response.
The surf gods were obviously pleased as they blessed the comp with some of the most comp worthy surf conditions that halfway has seen all year! All four of the divisions for the day, Women’s open ISC Pro, Women’s open body board Pro, First ever Contest and Daddy’s and Daughters were full by 8am and the girls were ready to paddle out for the first heats of the day.
By 9am the competition was well under way with the first heats for the ‘first ever contest’ division already taking place there was time to slip away to check out the rest of the totally awesome set up the Surfer Girl team had put together.
There were carnival games, the highlight of which being ‘the big splash’: three bull’s-eyes with a baseball earned you the joy of watching your chosen friend getting drenched by the water from the overhanging bucket! Food and beverage booths, complete with shaded picnic areas, skate run, horizontal bungee, slippery slide and a turtle release were all part of the program and that’s all before the main stage geared up for the evening entertainment!
Just before the finals for all of the divisions, it was time to head back to the surfing arena for the Daddy’s (or Mummy’s!) & Daughters part of the comp. Never done in Indonesia before this division was one of the highlights of the day, consisting of a Daddy, or Mummy and daughter pair surfing tandem on the same board, this division proved to be a huge success with laughter and smiles all around.
The event then took a slightly more serious tone as the finals for the other divisions started to take place. The girls were charging all day and the final was truly wonderful as the best female surfers in Indonesia showed the crowd on the beach what they were made of!!
As the sun began to set and the judges started tallying up the final scores for all divisions’ attention turned to the main stage as the entertainment for the evening began.
The delightfully bright and colorful Surfer Girl stage on the beach came to life as it was flooded with Polynesian dancers, Surfer Girl fashion shows, percussion performances by Javacia and Bali Children’s foundation, special cheerleading shows, an amazing performance by one of Indonesia’s up and coming starlets ‘Gretha’ and, just when we thought Surfer Girl couldn’t possibly have anything else in store, a full gig for all to enjoy by one of Indonesia’s top bands NIDJI!!
Speaking with Charlee, one of the main organizers of the day we tried to get a bit of an insight into the ideas and concept behind this truly extraordinary event,” At Surfer Girl we have a slogan that reads ‘fun is the key’,…with all of Surfer Girl events the team does everything that we can do to make sure that our events are packed full of fun, vibe and energy”.
Well, there was defiantly no lack of fun, vibe and energy, anyone lucky enough to have attended this awesome event would vouch that Surfer Girl, ‘The best all girls surf shop in the world’ had defiantly met all expectations in putting on ‘THE MOST FUN ALL GIRLS SURF COMPETITION IN THE WORLD’ we can’t wait until next year for the 2nd annual Surfer Girl Big Splash.
